> ## Documentation Index > Fetch the complete documentation index at: https://www.travel-info.co.zw/llms.txt > Use this file to discover all available pages before exploring further. # Gweru's Renamed Streets: Old and New Names > Gweru's renamed streets: the official old and new road names from the 1983 Names (Alteration) Act and the 2020 renamings in Statutory Instrument 167. **Gweru's colonial-era road names were officially changed by the Names (Alteration) Act, which commenced on 6 May 1983.** Livingstone Avenue became Robert Mugabe Way, Lock Avenue became Jason Moyo Avenue and Selukwe Road became Shurugwi Road. See our [Gweru guide](https://www.travel-info.co.zw/destinations/gweru.md) for what to see in the city. ## Gweru: 1983 renamings These are the Gweru roads listed in Part VII of the Schedule to the Names (Alteration) Act \[Chapter 10:14]. The same Act records the city's own change of name from Gwelo to Gweru. | Old name | New name | | - | - | | Allan Wilson Avenue | Leopold Takawira Avenue | | Antoniadis Road | Jairos Jiri Road | | Athlone Drive | Simon Mazorodze Drive | | Ayr Road | Masotsha Ndlovu Road | | Boggie Road | Robson Manyika Road | | Danziger Road | George Silundika Road | | Devon Road | Rekayi Tangwena Road | | Elm Street | Mashonganyika Street | | King Street | Kaguvi Street | | Livingstone Avenue | Robert Mugabe Way | | Lock Avenue | Jason Moyo Avenue | | Queens Street | Mbuya Nehanda Street | | Rhodes Avenue | Josiah Tongogara Avenue | | Selous Avenue | Herbert Chitepo Avenue | | Selukwe Road | Shurugwi Road | | Somerset Road | Josiah Chinamano Road | | Umvuma Road | Mvuma Road | | Van der Molen Avenue | 18 April Avenue | Gweru's numbered streets and Main Street are not in this list, so they were not renamed in 1983. 18 April is Zimbabwe's Independence Day. ## Gweru: 2020 renamings In July 2020 the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, July Moyo, issued **Statutory Instrument 167 of 2020**, the Names (Alteration) (Amendment of Schedule) Notice, 2020. It renamed roads in Bulawayo, Harare, Mutare, Masvingo, Gweru and other towns. For Gweru it lists: | Old name | New name in SI 167/2020 | | - | - | | 3rd Street | Richard Hove Street | | 6th Street | Nikita Mangena Street | | 7th Street | Joshua Nkomo Street | | Main Street | Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa | | Moffat Drive | Simon Muzenda Drive | The notice gives Main Street's new name as "Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa", without saying street or road. In April 2021 the High Court set SI 167/2020 aside **for Bulawayo only**, because the minister had not consulted Bulawayo City Council as section 4(2) of the Act requires. We found no court ruling about the Gweru names, so on paper they are in force.
