# Beitbridge Border Crossing Guide 2026

> How to cross the Beitbridge border between South Africa and Zimbabwe in 2026: hours, visas, vehicle permits, insurance, carbon tax, tolls and how to avoid touts.

**Beitbridge is the only road border between South Africa and Zimbabwe, and one of the busiest crossings in Africa.** It is open 24 hours. Crossing as a tourist in your own car takes an hour or two on a quiet day and much longer at peak times. You need a passport, a Zimbabwe visa if your nationality requires one, and, for the car, a ZIMRA temporary import permit, third-party insurance and carbon tax.

## At a glance

| **Countries** | South Africa (Musina, Limpopo) and Zimbabwe (Beitbridge, Matabeleland South) |
| **Opening hours** | 24 hours ([SA Border Management Authority](https://www.bma.gov.za/ports-of-entry-2/)) |
| **SA side phone** | +27 15 530 0070 |
| **Road** | N1 from Johannesburg (about 530 km) to the A6 toward Bulawayo, or the A4 toward Masvingo and Harare |
| **Busiest times** | Month ends, school holidays, Easter and the December–January festive season |
| **Pay with** | US dollars in cash for Zimbabwe fees, plus a card as backup |

## Before you leave home

### People

* **Passport:** valid for at least six months after you arrive, with at least three blank pages ([UK FCDO](https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/zimbabwe/entry-requirements)). Allow extra blank pages, because both countries stamp your passport each way.
* **Zimbabwe visa:** check your nationality on our [visas and entry guide](/essentials/visas-and-entry). Most visitors can buy a visa at the border, but an [e-visa](https://www.evisa.gov.zw) applied for in advance means one less queue.
* **Children:** carry full (unabridged) birth certificates. If only one parent is travelling, also carry a consent letter from the other parent.

### Your vehicle

* **Registration papers**, in the driver's name.
* **Owner's letter of authority**, if you are not the owner (for example a company or financed car). ZIMRA requires it to be dated within three months.
* **Police clearance** for the vehicle. ZIMRA's online permit page asks for one from drivers coming from any country other than Mozambique.
* **Safety kit:** Zimbabwe police can fine you if your car lacks a fire extinguisher, two warning triangles, a spare wheel, a jack and a wheel spanner. See [road safety and roadblocks](/essentials/travel-advice#road-safety-and-police-roadblocks).

> [!TIP]
>
> **Apply for your temporary import permit online** before you go, on ZIMRA's [e-TIP system](https://ecustoms.zimra.co.zw/etip/). It saves a queue at the border.

## What you pay on the Zimbabwe side

| Item | Cost | Notes |
| - | - | - |
| Zimbabwe visa | From US\$30 single entry | Depends on nationality. See [visas](/essentials/visas-and-entry) |
| Temporary import permit (TIP) | No fee stated by ZIMRA | Required for every foreign-registered private vehicle |
| Third-party insurance | US\$30 per month | Bought from ZIMRA at the border |
| Carbon tax | US\$10 per month | Paid to ZIMRA |
| Road tolls inside Zimbabwe | US$4 per toll on premium roads, US$3 on others | ZINARA rates for light vehicles. Harare–Beitbridge is a premium road |

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Road access fee:** ZIMRA's pages still list a US$10 road access fee per entry. Zimbabwean media, including The Herald, reported in July 2026 that Statutory Instrument 113 of 2026 abolished it. We could not confirm this from the official text, so carry an extra US$10 in case it is still charged.

Rental cars and commercial vehicles follow different rules: they need a commercial permit (CTIP) and a guarantee arranged through a clearing agent. Check with your rental company before you book. Many South African rental companies do not allow their cars into Zimbabwe, or charge extra for it.

## Crossing step by step

**1. Leave South Africa**

At the SA border post, get your passport stamped out. If you are driving, SA officials may check that your car's registration matches your papers.

**2. Cross the Limpopo bridge**

Drive across the bridge over the Limpopo River to the Zimbabwe border post.

**3. Zimbabwe immigration**

Fill in the arrival form, buy your visa if you need one, and get your passport stamped.

**4. ZIMRA customs**

Present your temporary import permit (or apply for one), and pay for third-party insurance and carbon tax. Declare goods you are carrying beyond personal use.

**5. Gate exit**

Show your stamped passport and all your receipts at the exit gate. Keep every receipt for the trip: police roadblocks and the return crossing may ask for them.

## Avoiding touts and scams

Beitbridge is known for "runners" who offer to speed you through the queues for a fee.

* **Deal only with officials in uniform, inside the border buildings.** You don't need an agent to cross as a tourist in a private car.
* **Never hand your passport or vehicle papers to anyone outside an official counter.**
* **Pay only at official counters and always get a receipt.**
* **Don't change money with street traders.** It is illegal and a common scam. Bring US dollars from home. See [currency and money](/essentials/currency-and-money).

## Tips for a faster crossing

* **Cross early on a weekday.** Avoid the last days of the month and the start and end of South African school holidays.
* **Fill up in Musina.** Fuel is paid for in US dollars in Zimbabwe, and stations between Beitbridge and Masvingo or Bulawayo are far apart.
* **Don't drive after dark in Zimbabwe.** Plan to reach Bulawayo, Masvingo or a lodge on the way before sunset. See [travel advice](/essentials/travel-advice).
* **Bring snacks and water.** Queues can be long and there is little shade.

## Alternatives to Beitbridge

The SA Border Management Authority lists no other road crossing between South Africa and Zimbabwe. To avoid Beitbridge, drivers usually go through **Botswana** and enter Zimbabwe at **Plumtree** (for Bulawayo) or **Kazungula** (for Victoria Falls). That route means crossing two extra borders and paying Botswana's fees, so it is only worth it if you are already heading west.

Groblersbrug–Martin's Drift crosses into **Botswana**, not Zimbabwe.
